2018 Grant Recipients

6th Year Grant-$5,000

Agency Background:  The PTO was established in 2000 to promote positive relations and partnerships in the Painted Sky community, coordinate programs that enhance the quality of education and raise funds not provided by the Amphitheater District for education excellence.  Community volunteers and parents were trained as tutors and teachers referred failing students to the new tutoring program named the “Thunderbird Resource Center”.

Focus of 2018 Grant: Due to the evolving student population at Painted Sky Elementary, the TRC would like to expand its services to provide support to teachers who have students in need of handwriting and phonics support. Painted Sky will use grant money to purchase two research based development programs called Handwriting Without Tears and Barbara Wilson’s Reading System, Foundations.  Painted Sky is also in need of book sets for reading groups and flexible wiggle cushions for more active learners. All of these purchases will provide better quality, and more interactive and interesting lessons for Painted Sky students school-wide.

Measurable Results: Students are expected to become more proficient in the targeted reading, writing or math skill(s) they are referred to work on in the TRC. The TRC has an efficient system in place to measure these outcomes and successes. With each student referral, teachers provide the TRC with student scores from standardized tests (such as DIBELS, MAP and AzMerit) as well as their own assessments (sight words, phonics, and reading fluency and comprehension). This data is recorded in a spreadsheet and utilized when the Coordinators match tutors and students together and plan lessons. At the end of the school year, or when students are exited from the program, teacher feedback and updated test results are obtained, recorded in the spreadsheet and used to measure student progress.
