2017 Grant Recipients

KIDS ANIMALS LIFE AND DREAMS-3rd Year Grant-$10,000

Agency Background: KALD’S mission is to build mentoring relationships with children and youth in foster care, create self-discovery activities, initiate volunteer opportunities, and help them develop their potential and prepare for a successful future.

Focus of 2017 Grant: Dreams in Motion, Youth Volunteer Program The mission of the program is to build mentoring relationships with youth in foster care, create self-discovery activities, initiate volunteer opportunities, and help youth develop their work and life skills to prepare for a successful future. Transportation by KALD is often the only way many foster teens can gain work experience at all. Transportation costs are a large expense for KALD.

Measurable Results: Student’s caseworkers have continually praised the Dreams in Motion program because it is beneficial and they continue to refer teens each year. Group home staff, foster parents and youth also provide positive feedback about the program and its benefits. 31 teens referred last year successfully participated in KALD’S program and volunteered. Many of them consistently completed 16 hours of volunteer work per month, providing them the opportunity to give back to the community while building self confidence and self-esteem. They anticipate an increase in participation for 2017 with the continued inclusion of youth under 16 years of age in the program. Some youth have chosen to maintain a long-term relationship with the program. All combined, last year’s participating youth completed over 680 hours of volunteer work per month.
