Agency Background: United Way of Tucson and Southern AZ (UWTSA) established a program in 1999 called First Focus on Kids. It focuses on improving the well-being and school-readiness of children in Northern Pima County, where the availability and accessibility to programs & services supporting early childhood development are very limited.

Focus of the 2015 SCCF Grant: Oro Valley & Catalina Early Childhood Program: First Focus on Kids Funding offers professional development opportunities for child care providers and other EC specialists in North Pima County through Stay and Plan parent education groups, developing and distributing written materials and resources for families.

Measurable Results:

  • Increase in number of parents and children participating in the Oro Valley Stay and Play group.
  • Positive results of survey of child care staff and early education center directors and staff as well as family home child care providers.
  • Over 2000 families will be reached through the distribution of educational and outreach material.
  • 500 children, birth to age five will increase literacy skills and expand their personal library by participating in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program.
