2015 Grant Recipients

1st Year Grant

Agency Background: KALD’S mission is to build mentoring relationships with children and youth in foster care, create self-discovery activities, initiate volunteer opportunities, and help them develop their potential and prepare for a successful future.

Focus of 2015 Grant: Dreams in Motion, Youth Volunteer Program In the past, KALD has been able to place foster teens into volunteer opportunities with many community organizations. In 2009, a teen volunteer work program, “Dreams in Motion” was added to that program. KALD uses a farm setting with animals to build mentoring relationships with children and youth in foster care. Teen volunteers who care for animals may improve their confidence, life and job skills and teach students more about themselves, their community, their abilities and their future options. In 2014 the “Dreams in Motion Studio” was opened which complements the animal program and provides a second location where youth can volunteer and gain job skills. Youth receive a more realistic experience of working with adults and other youth they may not know, simulating a working relationship with co-workers and supervisors. Youth can learn about the merchandise, how to price and stock shelves, and how to help customers and be a sales clerk.

Measurable Results: Of the 39 teens referred last year, 32 of them successfully participated in KALD’S program and volunteered, many of them consistently completing 16 hours of volunteer work per month. Combined, last year’s participating youth completed over 700 hours of volunteer. 95% were under the age of 18.
