2015 Grant Recipients

4th Year Grant

Agency Background: Camp Wildcat is a completely student-run non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged youth from the greater Tucson area by promoting a college education and general success as attainable goals. Camp wildcat accomplishes this goal by taking children from Title I schools in Tucson on nine annual camping trips to campsites throughout southern AZ. This is in addition to a variety of individual day camps run at local schools. These camps included ongoing tutoring and pen pal programs. All events are designed to give students the opportunity to experience the natural world, interact closely with positive role models. Explore diverse topics in a hands-on learning environment, express their creativity, challenge their own limits, and enhance their self-esteem and self –image.

Focus of the 2015 SCCF Grant: Big Camp 4 Big Camp 4 is the last “big Camp” of the 2014-2015 academic year. “Big Camps” take 50-60 4th and 5th graders from a local elementary school on a weekend-long camping trip to a campsite on Mt. Lemmon. The week end includes outdoor experiences filled with team building and education themed activities.

Measurable Results: Camp Wildcat: Before and after camp surveys indicate students often mark a greater interest in college after attending, and parents see a positive change in their child’s self-esteem.
