MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS (MWFB)
4th Year Funding
Diamond Family Fund Match
Agency Background: MWFB was incorporated as a non-profit organization in March 1998. Its mission is to promote early literacy in limited resource areas of southern Arizona by providing children (birth – 5 yrs) with an opportunity to fall in love with books and reading. The vision is that all children will enter school with the early literacy skills necessary to be successful.
Focus of the 2012 SCCF Grant: MWFB Preschool Program: Promoting Peace Through Picture Books
The MWFB “Promoting Peace Through Picture Books” project is unlike any other early literacy program offered in our community. The program combines developing reading readiness with social-emotional skills to preschoolers. This grant will serve approximately 800 disadvantaged children, ages three to five from 20 different preschool and child-care centers in low-resource areas of Pima County. An integral component of the program involves storybook extension activities that are designed to promote skill development in each of the six reading readiness areas identified in AZ Dept of Ed Standards of Pre-Reading.
