2010 GRANT AWARD RECIPIENTS

MUSEUM SCHOOL FOR THE VISUAL ARTS (MSVA) *

Agency Background: MSVA is located within the Tucson Museum of Art and is the result of a unique partnership created in 2008 between the Museum and the Tucson United School District. MSVA is one of the district’s 10 alternative education high schools and is the only school that relies on teaching methods associated with the informal setting of an art museum. Upon entering the MSVA, the majority of students possess a high risk for academic failure, delinquent social behavior, teen pregnancy, truancy and substance abuse.

Focus of the 2010 SCCF Grant: General Program OperationsAnnually, MSVA serves 26-32 youths between the ages of 15-19 who demonstrate a serious interest in art and would benefit from an alternative education setting including a low youth-to-teacher ratio and an independent learning plan. During half of the school day, students participate in visual art classes. In addition, TUSD delivers a regular government standardized academic curriculum.
